What message do you hear at funerals? What is the main focus of the pastor’s message? Is it not the case that the Lord has taken what God gave? (Job 1:21). Job made that statement to acknowledge that whatever he had was from God, and God had the power to take everything away. Truly, God can indeed take whatever He gives to us. We must be careful not to assume, though, that God is behind all our losses. Everything we have comes from Him (1 Cor 4:7), including life. That makes God the Source of all things (Col 3:4). Can we lose things that God gave to us? Yes, we can, and that includes our very lives. For instance, I have a nasty attitude, though God has promised me a bright future. Will God’s promises be fulfilled if I lead an immoral, conceited life, join a gang, use drugs, get caught, and either die or receive a life sentence in prison? Not necessarily, as God’s promises are not automatic or unconditional. I have a part to play. If I live a careless lifestyle and die, God is not to be blamed. And certainly not be glorified in my death.

People would have a lot to say during my funeral, and the minister might even reference Job. “Naked we came from our mother’s womb, and naked shall we return there. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” But God will be yelling in Heaven that He never took me! Religion has blinded us from seeing His goodness. He is innocent of the numerous accusations levelled at him. The story of Lazarus would be erased from the Bible in our days because preachers will glorify God in his death. We will dance and praise God for calling Lazarus home, even though it wasn’t his time. The Bible says that Satan came to steal, kill and destroy. (John 10:10). He has taken countless lives, of which millions of those were Christians. If God called Lazarus home, why would Jesus resurrect him? Will Jesus not be fighting against the Father? One Person says He wants Lazarus home, and the other says He wants him to live. In today’s time, the preacher would reassure the family that Lazarus was with God in heaven and that they would soon see him. If Lazarus had been an immigrant, his family may have intended to fly the body back home as a final gesture of respect.
Jesus had a different perspective. He realised that Lazarus wasn’t ready to die. Despite Mary and Martha’s cries, he refused to accept his fate and decided to resurrect Him. They concluded that once a person died, nothing could be done, so Mary and Martha accepted Lazarus’s fate. “Lord, our brother would not have died if you had been here,” they repeatedly said. If someone is buried for four days in the tomb, it must surely be the plan of God! Religion had circled a date on God’s calendar that said, “Lazarus must die today.”
Luke 7:11-16: “Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd. And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her. When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.” Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” So, he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother. Then fear came upon all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has risen up among us”; and “God has visited His people.” And this report about Him went throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region.” The life of this young man was over. The final funeral rites have been performed. The rabbis have offered their support and prayers. The community may have provided financial assistance to the family. Given that the boy was the only child of his mother, the loving God decided to take his life, grieving his mum. What if our broken world was the cause of this young man’s death? I wonder how many people are “resting” in their graves and how we praise God for their lives. Job’s assertion that “God gave and the Lord has taken away” is not totally accurate. In reality, the Lord did not deprive Job of anything. It was Satan. Job’s suffering was made up for by God. God restored Job for what Satan took, giving him twice as much. (Job 42:10).

Rarely does God take away from us what He has freely given us. What God entrusts to us is our responsibility. He gives us resources, and we are to take excellent care of them. We should neither be thoughtless nor uninformed, nor should we believe that God is responsible for all of our suffering. I can’t express everything I have to say, but we must be careful the way we blame God and assume He is responsible for our predicaments.
James 5:14-15: “Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.” (Emp mine). Today, there are many self-acclaimed Christians who don’t go to church, but they believe God should do everything for them just because they are Christians. If people had the chance, they would have asked God to do their laundry for them! This verse says we should call the church’s elders to pray for the sick. How many churches practice this? And how many Christians trust the church leaders’ prayers? Christians go to their doctors first when they are ill. As we will see in a moment, God has nothing against doctors. That verse must have been included in the Bible for a reason. Maybe God is aware that not all diseases can be treated by medical professionals. It’s possible that He is aware that not all sicknesses are physical and that not all physical illnesses may be cured in a hospital. If God says we should call the church’s elders to pray, and we feel that doesn’t make sense, who do we blame when those sick people die?
The Bible references a number of plants in relation to health, purification, or mental well-being, even though it is not a medical textbook:
• Figs (II Kings 20:7): A poultice of figs was used to heal King Hezekiah’s boil.
• Hyssop (Psalm 51:7): Frequently connected to rituals of purification or cleaning.
• Balm of Gilead (Jeremiah 8:22): Traditionally used as a remedy for wounds or sores.
• Leaves for Healing (Ezekiel 47:12; Revelation 22:2).
• Wine (1 Timothy 5:23): Paul suggests using a little wine for stomach ailments.
These verses are frequently cited to show that God intended vegetation to be used for people’s benefit and healing. Hence He is not against the use of medicine and certainly not against medical doctors.
• Psalm 91:16 – “With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation.” Why will God say He will give long life to people when He is the one who ultimately calls the shots.
• Psalm 118:17 – I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord.
So far, we have seen that it is possible for people to live before their time. God wants you to lead a life that is joyful, peaceful, and purposeful.

10 Reasons Why People Die Before Their Time
1. Disobeying Parents
Ephesians 6:2-3 says, “Honour your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.” Is it possible that some people’s lives are cut short because they do not honour their parents? Eli’s sons died before their time because they lived in disobedience. (I Sam 2:12-17).
1 Samuel 8:1–3, “Now it came to pass when Samuel was old that he made his sons judges over Israel. The name of his firstborn was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judges in Beersheba. But his sons did not walk in his ways; they turned aside after dishonest gain, took bribes, and perverted justice. (Emp added). Samuel’s sons lived in disobedience.
The most prominent account of a child dying “before his time” is found in 2 Samuel 12. David’s household suffered a significant tragedy later in his reign, often linked to the internal conflict and rebellion within his family:
• Amnon: Killed by his brother Absalom.
• Absalom: Died during his rebellion against his father.
• Adonijah: Executed after attempting to claim the throne.
These events are often discussed in the context of the consequences of David’s earlier actions and the turbulent nature of his family history.
2. Ignorance or Indiscipline
Proverbs 21:16 NLT says, “The person who strays from common sense will end up in the company of the dead.”
3. Suicide
Jeremiah 10:23 says, “O Lord, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps.” Some people can take their own lives as a result of the challenges they face in the world. Once more, it is not the Lord who took me if I died by poisoning myself or falling from a tall building.
4. Accidents And Natural Disasters
Millions of people are killed by hurricanes, storms, rain, earthquakes, and other natural disasters. Every day, people are murdered in car accidents, and police have accidentally fired and killed others. Negligence, mistakes made by employees or employers, drug overdoses, food poisoning, and a host of other causes result in fatalities at work. Since God is not the cause of all these deaths, He cannot be commended for them. Is abortion God’s will? Of course not.

5. Being Too Evil or Wicked
Ecclesiastes 7:17, “Do not be overly wicked, nor be foolish: Why should you die before your time? (Emp mine). This verse should convince you if you haven’t already. It is made quite plain that if a person is too ignorant or wicked, they may die before their time. Do you recall Acts 12’s account of Herod Agrippa I? You will run into a lot of problems if you walk with fools. (Pro 13:20).
6. Being Too Religious
Some Christians fast for an extended period of time and end up dead. There have been instances where Christians have actually consumed poison because they thought it wouldn’t hurt them. Others have literally picked up venomous snakes, which did not sit well with them. “So don’t be too good or too wise! Why destroy yourself?” (Eccl 7:16.)
7. Satanic Covenants.
Some people make contracts with the devil that end their lives.
8. Dishonouring the Holy Communion
“Therefore, whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. For this reason, many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep.” (1 Cor 11:27-32).
9. Fulfilled Purpose
Premature death is often understood to mean “dying young” by many people, including Christians. However, the truth is that your death is premature if you pass away before fulfilling the reason you were born. Every human being was created with the intention of leading a Christlike life. Many would argue that Jesus’ death at age 33 was premature, but the truth is that He had fulfilled the reason for His birth. Jesus came to die in order to atone for our sins and grant us eternal life. Although John the Baptist died too soon, he had fulfilled his mission. When we have fulfilled our purpose, God occasionally permits us to return home. “Good people pass away; the godly often die before their time. But no one seems to care or wonder why. No one seems to understand that God is protecting them from the evil to come. Those who follow godly paths will rest in peace when they die.” (Isaiah 57:1-2). The Apostle Paul’s own life is a living testimony of this truth: “For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness…” (II Timothy 4:6-8).
Nobody can determine when their purpose has been fulfilled. God alone knows. The great majestic God who lives eternally considers something far more permanent: the spiritual character we are developing for sonship in His Kingdom.
Our goal for being human is fulfilled when our spiritual lives are shaped for God’s Family, and we are ready to become His sons! In His wisdom, God looks down from His throne and decides when it’s appropriate for us to be home.
10. God’s Ultimate Bigger Purposes.
Psalm 116:15 says: “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.” When His people have advanced to the point where they are fit to work in His Kingdom, God rejoices. At the right moment, when God sees it fit, He calls His children home to allow others to continue the assignment in the divine scheme of things as a living testimony, so that God’s work may increase and grow. God frequently killed kings and leaders—both good and bad—in ancient Israel to carry out His plan! Moses, for instance, was denied access to the Promised Land. The position of authority was assigned to Joshua to lead God’s chosen people, demonstrating that some are taken when their task is finished to make room for others to continue God’s work!
And for the remaining Christians, their deaths frequently serve as living examples of their perseverance and faith. The Bible is a chronicle of history, documenting the appearance and passing of great spiritual leaders. The same has occurred, albeit on a smaller scale, in the personal lives of regular God-followers. In such instances, let us not question or doubt God’s integrity. Hebrews 11 describes believers who were tortured, whipped, and even killed for God’s sake. However, their lives influenced others’ destinies (verses 35–38). These individuals served as a striking example of faith, bravery, and complete trust in God, just as Christ did before His persecutors. It demonstrates faith in something far greater than this world has to offer. The world is always witness to the flames of God’s martyrs, which have scorched the pages of history. But keep in mind that they have it ready and will shine brightly in God’s Kingdom.

Remember also the example of those who were willing to give their life but were not required to, such as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego (Daniel 3). They had great faith in God and gave a great witness. They were aware that God could deliver them from death, but they were unsure if God would decide to do so at that particular time (verses 16–18). However, they had complete faith in God’s final deliverance. Not every Christian is called to be a martyr; God does not demand that everyone die or encounter death in order to be delivered in this manner. But according to I Corinthians 10:13, He does guarantee that you won’t be tempted beyond what you can handle.
