Topical Bible Study
Do you read the Bible at random? There is nothing wrong with it. Do you read it on your phone? There is nothing wrong, but how often do you do Topical Bible Study? God has something to say in every situation you face, but He has hidden them in His Word instead of talking to you personally about them. The Word of God is saturated and always has something more to say. You must join the dots to get the Rhema suited for your personal needs. You can scribble one or two verses on your notes book, but that is not an effective way of dealing with issues.
Whether you are in financial difficulty, troubling marriage, in fear, anxious, frightened by a dream, nervous, looking for work, in health crisis, relationship issues, or parental issues, Jehovah Shammah” is There. God is never far away. The Psalmist says “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1; emp added). Family and friends may be far, and your neighbours may not be helpful, but we have a Friend in Jesus Who is closer than a brother. (Pro 18:24). I realised that there are times that one needs God in the now, not the future. God is also “The God of Emergency.” He is everywhere simultaneously and is always aware of things even before they happen to us. Knowing that God is always with us should brighten our mood despite our challenges.
It is not enough for God to be There; God must be involved in that situation. You must realise that God’s hand is mighty and willing to intervene in your case. However, we must “move” that hand. God is no respecter of persons (Acts 10:34), and it took me years to accept that. Why does God appear to answer some people “quicker” than others?
What Is Topical Bible Study?
A Topical Bible Study approaches the Bible by looking at a specific topic or theme. We make numerous decisions every day, and we need to know the mind of God regarding what we do. Sometimes, the Lord will only say one word. For example, I need a financial breakthrough, and I’ve been praying about it for some time, then hear the word “Sacrifice” firmly laid on my heart. What should you do? The worse thing is to ignore it. God doesn’t speak much and it appears that He talks a lot more when you specifically ask Him questions. I do not want to go into many things right now, and this article is not about hearing the voice of God. Whatever God lays on your heart must not be ignored; you must have the time to focus on it. What should I do with the word “Sacrifice”? I must spend time studying it. How many Bible verses do you know about Sacrifice? Therefore, Topical Bible Study is important.
Why choose to study The Bible by Topic?
A burning glass or burning lens is a large convex lens that can concentrate the sun’s rays onto a small area, heating up the area and thus resulting in ignition of the exposed surface. This principle works with the Word of God as well. There is power in concentration, and I don’t know how best to make you understand that. Let’s say you have a friend who is going through a hard time in their life. When they come to you with their issue, what will you do? How will you encourage them? John 3:16 is a good verse but may be irrelevant to someone dying of cancer. Even though all Scriptures are inspired (2 Tim 3:16), what your friend needs at that moment is precisely what the Bible says about their situation.
Suppose you want God to use you to raise the dead. How can that be possible? Aside from praying and fasting about it, you must study the life of people who died and were raised from the dead. Is it that necessary? Yes. As you mature in the things of God, you will realise that there is more to prayer. I spend a lot of time in prayers, but I know it isn’t the only solution.
Do you know that you can be a victorious Christian by spending more time on the Word of God? I believe God has blessed the church with gifts that and there is nothing wrong in seeking those gifted to minister to you. However, that is not how God want His children to live. “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light” (1 Pet 2:9). If you truly believe this verse, it will make my work easy. God wants to build a one-on-one relationship with you, and this is possible if you can spend considerable time in the Scriptures. Instead of chasing prophets, why not become one?
I created this page to help a brother or a sister “sharpen” an area of their life. Topical Bible study is essential because, we make it easy for God to come through for us. If have a sick friend or family, the best thing you can do to assist them spiritually is by encouraging and giving them direct verses that speak on their situation. If you trust God for healing, the logical thing is to focus on Healing Verses, and that is how you create an atmosphere for your miracle.
God desires to intervene in every situation, but we must make room for Him. He doesn’t understand much talk; you are not smarter than Him and an articulate speech doesn’t move Him either. His Word does the trick. “These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.” (1 Corinthians 2:13). Comparing spiritual things with spiritual is a way of doing a Topical Bible Study. Not all verses in the Bible speak directly to you, so you need to compare until you can sap the necessary nutrients. I can tell you that there are so many goodies in the Bible, but it cannot cook by itself. You may have so much in your kitchen cabinet, but not until you combine them and cook, you won’t have a proper meal. People want to open the Bible and get all they want without “wasting” time. We want everything immediately but using a microwave as a piece of biblical equipment wouldn’t warm a cup of milk. There is no shortcut to the things of God, and I learnt that in the hardest possible way. Today, it can take me a whole day to get the spiritual food I want.
Do you know uncooked food will harm you? You cannot glance through the Bible and expect a miracle like that, and you cannot take someone’s revelation and make it yours without taking time to meditate on them. You cannot take any Scripture, pray with it, and trust God for a miracle. God isn’t interested in giving you a fish each day when He can teach you how to fish. Instead of praying for God to provide you with a divine revelation, why not live in one?
You cannot be watching ungodly stuff on TV and simultaneously trust God to perform a miracle. The Scriptures we read in 1 Corinthians say we should compare spiritual things with spiritual. You don’t compare spiritual things with carnality. I am not against entertainment, but if you need a significant breakthrough in any area of your life, you must put in the effort. No one has been rewarded for spending a longer time on the television. You can never be enlightened by what you see on TV. We are in a generation where most ladies are afraid of wearing decent clothing, and the amount of unbelief, cuss words and immorality is disturbing. I don’t care which is the latest or a must-watch program; none of them can edify you spiritually. It would help if you created an atmosphere for your miracle; otherwise, you would prolong your testimony.
Studying the Bible by topic is terrific. It’s not wrong to look up your questions on google or look to your favourite Christian teachers and influencers. However, it’s better to consult the Word directly and let the Holy Spirit lead you to the truth. (John 16:13). Even though you may not find all the answers to your questions, you’ll learn a lot. As you hunger and thirst for God’s Word, He will fill you with knowledge and understanding.
