Inspiration 19

Let people stay within limits and humble themselves before the only One who has no limits; God. It takes Christ to keep an otherwise proud person humbled by His Spirit. Usually, people who have riches seek to show off to attract the praise of men. They do the unthinkable and suffer for it as Belshazzar did. He did a foolish thing before his wives and concubines.

“While he tasted the wine, Belshazzar gave the command to bring the gold and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the Temple which had been in Jerusalem that the king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines might drink from them.” (Dan 5:2). Nebuchadnezzar was humiliated by God for ascribing greatness and majesty to himself. However, Belshazzar did not learn from this experience when he became King of Babylon. In his moment of pleasure after drinking some wine, he asked for the vessels of gold and silver to be brought so they could drink from them. These were containers from which not even his grandfather Nebuchadnezzar drank, but he, his successor, chose to drink from them. These were vessels dedicated to God. Using them for human pleasure was an offence to God.

Whilst making merry with his cohorts, suddenly, the fingers of a human hand appeared and began writing on the King’s palace’s wall. The King saw part of the hand and was scared to death. He sought someone to interpret it, but only Daniel could do it. He deduced that God had numbered the days of his kingdom and brought it to an end.

That very night, Darius of Mede took Belshazzar’s kingdom. (Dan 5). Can you see how God dealt with a powerful king who had desecrated His vessels before his wives and concubines? His appearance changed, and the colour of his skin changed, which terrified him. His thoughts alarmed him, his limbs gave way, and his knees knocked together.

Scriptures.

When pride comes, then comes shame; but with the humble is wisdom. (Pro 11:2).

Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion. (Rom 12:16).

The Lord has given a command concerning you: “Your name shall be perpetuated no longer.
Out of the house of your gods, I will cut off the carved image and the moulded image. I will dig your grave, for you are vile.” (Nah 1:14).
