13. Solomon: A Type of Christ. (Part 1).

1. Both Rode on a Donkey as King Announcement.

1 Kings 1:33 “The king also said to them, “Take with you the servants of your lord and have Solomon, my son ride on my own mule, and take him down to Gihon. There let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him king over Israel; and blow the horn, and say, ‘Long live King Solomon!’ Solomon rode a mule. A mule is the offspring of a male donkey (jack) and a female horse (mare). Solomon rode on a mule, which is a donkey-horse breed. Matthew 21:5 and Zechariah 9:9 quote, “Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”

2) Both were anointed.

“There let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him king over Israel.” (1 kg 1:33). Acts 10:38 “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.”

3) Both are Called the Son of David.

Solomon was the son of David from Bathsheba. 2 Samuel 12:24. “Then David comforted Bathsheba, his wife, and went into her and lay with her. So she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon.” His title throughout the Bible is the son of David before Christ.

Solomon is the son of David.

  • Proverbs 1:1: “The proverbs of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel.” (Emp added).
  • 2 Chronicles 1:1, “Now Solomon the son of David was strengthened in his kingdom, and the Lord, his God, was with him and exalted him exceedingly.”

Jesus is the Son of David.

Jesus Christ is called the son of David at various times in the New Testament. Matt 21:9, Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: “Hosanna to the Son of David!‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of theLord!’Hosanna in the highest!” Matt 15:22, And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.” Matt 20:31, Then the multitude warned them that they should be quiet; but they cried out all the more, saying, “Have mercy on us, O Lord, Son of David!” Mark 10:48 Then many warned him to be quiet, but he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

4. God Established Both Men’s Kingdom.

God established Solomon’s kingdom. 2 Chronicles 1:1, “Now Solomon the son of David was strengthened in his kingdom, and the Lord his God was with him and exalted him exceedingly.” There is a natural language and a spiritual language in the Bible, and we need to understand that. God can be talking to one person but, at the same time, talking to a future generation. For example, Gen 3:15 says, “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.” This is written in the NKJV to make us know the Seed is Jesus by using the capital “S”. The way God spoke to Eve appears that Eve is the one who will have a child who would bruise the heel of the serpent, but God was talking to Eve about Jesus. God will often speak to Abraham in Genesis and mention “thy seed”. For example, Gen 17:7 says, “And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.” Who was Abraham’s seed? Isaac, right? Yet, God was also talking to Abraham about Jesus. Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “And to your Seed,” who is Christ.” God was talking to Abraham about Isaac. Still, at the same time, He was talking to him about Jesus. (Gal 3:16). In 2 Samuel 7:12-15, God was speaking to David here. “When your days are fulfilled, and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. God then switched from Solomon to Jesus because Solomon’s kingdom was not established forever; he died. We continue from verse 14, “I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. (This is both true for Solomon and Jesus. Then He switches again). “If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men. But My mercy shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before you.”

5. Both Had Wisdom From God.

Both men had wisdom directly from God whilst they were on earth. 1 Kings 5:12, “So the Lord gave Solomon wisdom, as He had promised him; and there was peace between Hiram and Solomon, and the two of them made a treaty together.” 1 Kings 4:30. “Thus Solomon’s wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the men of the East and all the wisdom of Egypt.”

Jesus was the wisdom of God.

Matt 12:42: “The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here.”  Matt 7:29: “For He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.” Colossians 2:2-3 says, “That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and Christ; In whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. 1 Cor 1:20-24, “Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.”

6. Both Were Very Popular.

People from all over came to hear from both men. Solomon was very popular. People from all nations came to listen to Solomon. 1 Kings 4:34, “And men of all nations, from all the kings of the earth who had heard of his wisdom, came to hear the wisdom of Solomon.”

Jesus was very popular.

  • John 6:2: “Then a great multitude followed Him because they saw His signs which He performed on those who were diseased.”
  • Mark 10:1: “Then He arose from there and came to the region of Judea by the other side of the Jordan. And multitudes gathered to Him again, and as He was accustomed, He taught them again.”
  • Luke 8:4: “And when a great multitude had gathered, and they had come to Him from every city, He spoke by a parable.”
  • Luke 8:40: “So it was, when Jesus returned, that the multitude welcomed Him, for they were all waiting for Him.”
  • Mark 7:24: “From there He arose and went to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And He entered a house and wanted no one to know it, but He could not be hidden.”
7. Both Called Teacher & Preacher.

In Ecclesiastes, Solomon is titled a teacher. “The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.” Jesus’ disciples refer to Him as Rabbi, which is the Teacher. John 20:16, Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to Him, “Rabboni!” (Which is to say, Teacher).

  • John 1:38: “Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, “What do you seek?” They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, when translated, Teacher), “where are You staying?”
  • John 1:49: “Nathanael answered and said to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”
  • Mark 14:45: “As soon as he had come, immediately he went up to Him and said to Him, “Rabbi, Rabbi!” and kissed Him.
  • Mark 11:21: “And Peter, remembering, said to Him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree which You cursed has withered away.””
8. Kingdom Established After Defeating Enemies.

Solomon’s kingdom was established in his hands after he destroyed all his father’s enemies (1 Kings 2:5-46). The Lord’s kingdom was launched after defeating all His Father’s enemies.

  •  Col 2:14-15 says, “Having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them.”
  •  1 John 3:8, “He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose, the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.”
  • 1 Cor 15:24-27: “Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. The last enemy that will be destroyed is death.”
  • Rev 1:18, “I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and Death.”
9) Both Built the House of God or the Church.

2 Samuel 7:13 “He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. Three times in verses 13-16, God uses the word forever. So, we know this is looking beyond Solomon because he didn’t live or reign forever. Jesus built the authentic and more excellent house of God. We know Solomon built a physical house, or temple, for God. But Jesus made a more critical spiritual place known as the church. The temple was where the presence of God resided. The high priest would enter the most holy place into God’s presence, so we could understand the temple was the meeting place between God and man. The meeting place between God and man is the temple. Jesus was both God and Man, and therefore, His body became a temple. John 2:18, “So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it up in three days.” The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?” But He was speaking of the temple of His body.”
