12. Noah: A Type of Christ.
1. Preachers of Righteousness.
Both men were preachers of righteousness. Noah preached on how people should get right with God. 2 Peter 2:5: “And did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly.” (Emp added). 1 Corinthians 1:30, “But of Him, you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption.”
B) Both Were Blameless.
Noah was perfect in his generation. (Gen 6:9). Jesus was and is perfect.
- “Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.” (1 Pet 1:18-19).
- “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” (2 Cor 5:21).
Jeremiah 23:5, “Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord, “That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; a King shall reign and prosper, and execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell safely; now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.” This is where we got the name, “Jehovah T’sidkenu”, God our Righteousness. See also (Jer 33:16).
2. Walk Faithfully with God.
Both men walk faithfully with God. “This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God.” Genesis 6:9. Noah walked faithfully and found favour in the sight of the Lord.
Jesus walked with God faithfully. “Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.” Revelation 19:11: “Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness, He judges and makes war.”
3. Salvation of Family.
God saved Noah’s family from the flood due to Noah’s righteousness. Genesis 7:1 “Then the Lord said to Noah, “Come into the ark, you and all your household because I have seen that you are righteous before Me in this generation.” Hebrews 11:7: “By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.”
- So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.” Acts 16:31.
4. There was only one door to Noah’s Ark.
There was only one way to enter the ark, not two or three. Genesis 7:16 in the NLT says, “A male and female of each kind entered, just as God had commanded Noah. Then the LORD closed the door behind them.” God didn’t close “the doors” of the ark but “the door of the Ark.”
John 10:9; “I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.” John 14:6 says, “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Noah represented the Father, and the ark represented the Son, and no one could go to Noah without going the door. You will be considered a thief if you try to get to the ark through the window.
5. Salvation was by the Ark.
The only means to be saved from the flood was getting into the ark. That was a symbol of grace right there. It didn’t matter your education qualifications, height, weight, Bible knowledge, or how good or bad you were. If you want to be saved, you get into the ark. Those who felt they were righteous built their structures or probably carried their umbrellas. There were architects and builders in those days, and people felt their houses were robust, but they died for not entering the ark.
- Salvation is by Jesus and Him alone. It doesn’t matter how good you are, how wonderful you are, how much money you give to charity, your educational background. The only means of salvation is by Jesus. Acts 4:12 says, “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
People are building their salvation structure today, but it will lead them to Hell because there is no other way to the Father except through Jesus. People are looking for ways to preserve their bodies and believe that someday, science will have a breakthrough to be brought back to life. Any other thing you do apart from getting to Jesus is a waste, and you will also perish.
B). Those who refused to get to the ark drown because the anger of God consumed them. Those who don’t get to Jesus die because the wrath of God comes upon them. John 3:36 He who believes in the Son has everlasting life, and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
6. Ark is to be covered with Pitch.
Gen 6:14 says, “Make yourself an ark of gopherwood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and outside with pitch.” Pitch here refers to something like tar. Amplified Bible puts it this way. “Make yourself an ark of gopher wood; make in it rooms (stalls, pens, coops, nests, cages, compartments) and coat it inside and out with pitch (bitumen).” Bitumen is also called asphalt, made from the distillation of crude oil. The essence is to prevent water from getting into it. The ark would have been soaked and destroyed if Noah had not done that.
Jesus is our covering or protector. He “covers” us inside and outside when we come to Him. Psalm 91:4, “He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings, you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.” Psalm 18:2: “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”
7. Mediators of A New Covenant.
God established a new covenant through Noah by promising that He would never wipe out the earth with a flood again. Genesis 9:11-17, “Thus I establish My covenant with you: Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” And God said: “This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. It shall be when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud; and I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” And God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth.” Jesus is the Mediator or a New Covenant. Heb 9:15: “And for this reason, He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.” Hebrews 8:6, “But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.”
8. People Saw Their Nakedness & Both Humiliated.
Genesis 9:21-23. He drank some wine, got drunk, and lay naked inside his tent. Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father naked. So he went outside and told his two brothers. Shem and Japheth took a blanket and laid it over their shoulders. Then they walked in backwards and covered their father’s naked body. They turned their faces away so that they didn’t see their father naked.” (GWT). Jesus was made naked. “Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. (John 19:23). He was also humiliated. Matthew 26:67, “Then they spat in His face and beat Him, and others struck Him with the palms of their hands.”
9. Both Gave Sacrifices To God.
Noah provided a sweet sacrifice to God. Genesis 8:21, “Then Noah built an altar to the Lord, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. And the Lord smelled a soothing aroma.” Jesus Christ provided a pleasing sacrifice to God. 1 John 1:2 says, “And He [that same Jesus] is the propitiation for our sins [the atoning sacrifice that holds back the wrath of God that would otherwise be directed at us because of our sinful nature—our worldliness, our lifestyle]; and not for ours alone, but also for [the sins of all believers throughout] the whole world.”
10. Vineyard.
Both men have a vineyard. Noah created a vineyard after the flood Genesis 9:20, “And Noah began to be a farmer, and he planted a vineyard.” Jesus is the true Vine. “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” The Kingdom of God is a type of vineyard in many verses of the Bible. (Mark 12:1-9, Matthew 20:1-16).
11. Both Sent Doves.
Genesis 8:8-10. “Noah sent a dove to check out the earth. “He also sent out from himself a dove to see if the waters had receded from the face of the ground. But the dove found no resting place for the sole of her foot, and she returned into the ark to him, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth. So he put out his hand, took her, and drew her into the ark to himself. And he waited yet another seven days, and again he sent the dove out from the ark. Genesis 1:2 says, “The earth was without form and void, and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” The word hovered is synonymous with “flew”, “soared”, or “brood”. In creation, the Spirit of God hovered. Noah sent the bird to hover over the earth. When Jesus was baptised, the Spirit, like a bird, hovered on Him. (Matthew 3:16). Jesus sent the Holy Spirit when He ascended for the Spirit to “hover” over us; thus, cover, protect and look after us. Hallelujah!
