10. Joshua: A Type of Christ.
1. Name.
Joshua means “God is my Saviour.” Jesus also means Saviour, and they have the same root word in Hebrew. Luke 2:11, “For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.”
2. Commanders.
Both men are commanders of an army. Joshua 1:10, “Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying, “Pass through the camp and command the people, saying, ‘Prepare provisions for yourselves, for within three days you will cross over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land which the Lord your God is giving you to possess.’ ”
Revelation 19:11-14. “Now I saw Heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness, He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies in Heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses.” So He said, “No, but as Commander of the army of the Lord, I have now come.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, worshipped, and said to Him, “What does my Lord say to His servant?”
3. Rewards.
Both men reward their people’s inheritance. (Joshua 15-18). 2 John 1:8, “Look to yourselves, that we do not lose those things we worked for, but that we may receive a full reward.” Revelation 22:12, “And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work.”
4. Command Nature to be Still.
Joshua commanded the sun to be still, and it was so. Joshua 10:12-13. “Then Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel: “Sun, stand still over Gibeon; and Moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.”
So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the people had revenge
Upon their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of Heaven and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day. Jesus commanded the wind and sea to be still, and it was so. Calming the storm is one of the miracles of Jesus in the Gospels, reported in Matthew 8:23–27, Mark 4:35–41, and Luke 8:22–25 (the Synoptic Gospels).
5. Faith
Faith in Joshua was what took the Israelites to the Promised Land. Numbers 14:6-9. “But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes; and they spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying: “The land we passed through to spy out is exceedingly good land. If the Lord delights in us, He will bring us into this land and give it to us, ‘a land which flows with milk and honey.’ Only do not rebel against the Lord, nor fear the people of the land, for they are our bread; their protection has departed from them, and the Lord is with us. Do not fear them.” Faith in Jesus is what takes us to Heaven. John 14:1, “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, also believe in Me.” Acts 4:12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under Heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Romans 10:9-10, “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.”
6. No One Goes to the Promised Land Except By Joshua.
Joshua 1:1-3, “After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, it came to pass that the Lord spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, saying: “Moses My servant is dead. Now, therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all these people, to the land I am giving to them—the children of Israel. I have given you every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon, as I said to Moses.” No one goes to Heaven except by Jesus. If you want the sole of your feet to tread in Heaven, you must follow Jesus. John 14:6. “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.””
7. Threatened to be Stoned.
Joshua was threatened to be stoned for telling the truth. Numbers 14:9-10, “Only do not rebel against the Lord, nor fear the people of the land, for they are our bread; their protection has departed from them, and the Lord is with us. Do not fear them.” And all the congregation said to stone them with stones. Now the glory of the Lord appeared in the tabernacle of meeting before all the children of Israel.” Jesus Christ was about to be stoned for telling the truth. John 8:58-59, “Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.” Then they took up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by. John 10:30-31, “I and My Father are one.” Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him.”
8. Obedience
Joshua did the will of God and led the people to the Promise Land. Jesus did the will of God, and we are saved if we believe. John 6:38, “For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.”
9. River Jordan.
Joshua 3:14-16. “So it was when the people set out from their camp to cross over the Jordan, with the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people, and as those who bore the ark came to the Jordan, and the feet of the priests who bore the ark dipped in the edge of the water (for the Jordan overflows all its banks during the whole time of harvest), that the waters which came down from upstream stood still, and rose in a heap very far away at Adam, the city that is beside Zaretan.” The river was at its peak when they crossed which symbolises freedom for the Israelites. The river represented blood. The blood of Jesus “parts” the River Jordan for us so we can get to our Promised Land (Heaven). You have also crossed River Jordan to your Promised Land if you are saved. Matthew 3: 13, “Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptised by him.”
10. Walls Broken.
The walls of Jericho were broken under the leadership of Joshua. When Jesus died, it says in Matthew 27:51, “Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split.” The veil was “broken” supernaturally, just as the walled city of Jericho was supernaturally broken.
11. Salvation of a Gentile.
Rahab, the prostitute, was a Gentile saved under the leadership of Joshua. We (the Gentiles) are saved under the supervision of Jesus. John 10:16, “And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice, and there will be one flock and one shepherd.”
12. Servants.
Joshua was a servant of Moses, and Jesus became a servant to us. Phil 2:5-7 “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.”
