“And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshipped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold frankincense, and myrrh.” ( Matt 2 : 11). Gifts must be offered with significance and meaning to give it purpose and value. The 3 wisemen travelled from the east to present 3 unique and specific gifts that had immense significance to the life of Jesus. They presented gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The gold was in honour of Jesus’ royalty as it was the birth of a new king. Frankincense represented his flawlessness, righteousness, and holiness, which would attract men unto God for reconciliation. Myrrh was used in ancient times to preserve dead bodies. Hence, it signified the death of Jesus.
As the year comes to an end, we must offer sacrifices unto God with significance, for without significance, the offering carries little weight. God has preserved us throughout the year and in the midst of difficult economic crisis He provided for us. This is the time to offer a gift of appreciation unto God for what He has done and in anticipation of what He would do next year, 2023.
