Inspiration 84

Seek God with our whole hearts. The Psalmist tells us of his wholehearted commitment to seek God. He had a passionate desire for the Lord. For him, a casual, half-hearted commitment was not enough. If he was going to follow the path of the Lord, he had to pursue the Lord with intensity. “Hide God’s Word in our heart.” The Hebrew word translated “hide” means “to store up”, “hoard”, or “lay up”.  It is similar to someone building up an investment account for a project. How do we hide God’s Word in our hearts?

“With my whole heart, I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments! Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.” (Ps 119:10-11). God’s Word in our hearts enables us to discern God’s will. In the natural, when we know what people always want and remember it, we can please those people. This works in all our relationships. Similarly, when we see what God wants and remember them, we can please God and make choices that align with His will.

Know the Scriptures.  Beyond reading, we must understand the Scriptures. If we only read without understanding, we could become mindless Christian fanatics, but God wants us to gain knowledge.  The Word must be understood to hide God’s Word in our hearts as God intended it to be understood.

Memorize the Scriptures. This happens naturally as you read and study the Bible frequently.  Over time, God’s Word sinks into our hearts. It becomes part of our being. Our Lord Jesus resisted the wrong path suggested by Satan with a quotation from the Word of God. He did not have to quote the book chapter and verse! He only spoke the Word in His heart, enough to break the enemy’s distraction.

Scriptures.

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. (Jas 1:22).

But He said, “More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” (Lk 11:28).

The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.” (Is 40:8).
