“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” (Eph 6:12). Today, we shall look at how our God remains in control irrespective of the turbulent times we find ourselves. In the passage above, Apostle Paul wrote to the church of Ephesus, enlightening them about another world which controls the physical things we see and experience daily. He informs them that to succeed in life’s battles; you need to shift your focus from contending with the physical to waging war against the spiritual realm, which he refers to as the unseen world. Child of God, like in the time of Apostle Paul, we are contending against powers and spirits in the unseen world. These authorities constantly engage us in a battle to defeat us and ensure that God’s plans and purpose for our lives do not materialise. These are evil rulers. Therefore, this requires that we always walk in the spirit and war in the spirit so that God will reveal to us the daily devices of the enemy against us. Despite the robust nature of the powers we contend with, I assure you that the enemy defeated by Jesus Christ on the cross many years ago remains defeated today and forever. “Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them.” (Col 2:15).
“Therefore, take up the whole armour of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” (Eph 6:13). Apostle Paul reveals to the church in Ephesus one of the requirements of engaging in spiritual warfare against the authorities and rulers in the unseen world. He admonishes them that to succeed against the enemy’s devices, a believer must put on the whole armour of God because that is the time of evil. In the realms of the physical, a soldier preparing for battle must clothe himself appropriately to defend himself against attacks. That soldier must also carry weapons to launch attacks against the enemy. These are rules of engagement. The same principles also apply in spiritual battles. You are always required to wear armour and carry a sword to protect you against the arrows that fly daily and the pestilence that comes by night.
Ephesians 6:14-17 describes the armour as follows, “Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” I admonish you just as Apostle Paul did to employ these rules of engagement today as you step out, resist the enemy’s attacks against your life and gain victory in the spirit.
