What does stagnation mean? When there is no advancement or genuine development in the proper direction, it is called stagnation. You may feel immobile, moving very slowly, or not moving at all. Nothing seems to grow or alter in this state of inactivity. The dictionary defines stagnant as inactive, as if something were dead or asleep. Stagnation can occur in various areas of life, including relationships, work, spirituality, and personal development. We are not progressing while we are stationary. We seem to be standing motionless or moving in circles.
The Bible provides numerous instances of individuals or circumstances in which stagnation occurred. The Israelites in the wilderness are a prime example. They spent forty years wandering in the desert after God’s powerful hand freed them from Egypt. Their disobedience, lack of trust, and incessant whining turned what was meant to be a journey to the Promised Land into a protracted time of stasis. Instead of advancing towards what God had promised them, they circled about (Numbers 14:33–34). God selected Saul to be the first king of Israel, but his disobedience and disregard for God caused him to become spiritually stagnant. Saul tried to defend his disobedience of God’s mandate in 1 Samuel 15. His spiritual development stalled as a result of this disobedience, and eventually God rejected him as king. Saul lost his position and rewards because he was unable to obey and seek God’s guidance.

Stagnation in Our Lives Today

Just as it occurs in the Bible, stagnation can happen in our lives today. It can occur in our spiritual journeys when we feel cut off from God, or in our professional lives when we feel we’re not truly progressing. It can also show up in our personal lives when we feel that nothing is changing despite our best efforts. One area where stagnation might happen is in our beliefs. Sometimes we may feel distant from God, as though nothing is happening in our spiritual lives or as though our prayers go unanswered. This can happen if we stop praying, reading the Bible, and interacting with other Christians. If we lose our enthusiasm for God, we can become spiritually stagnant, much like the church in Laodicea, which Jesus characterised as lukewarm in Revelation 3:15–16.

Our personal development might also stagnate. Even though we may have aspirations and objectives, nothing seems to change despite our best efforts. This can be depressing and frustrating. But the Bible exhorts us to keep moving forward. We should “forget those things which are behind and reach forward to those things which are ahead,” as Paul states in Philippians 3:13–14. Understanding this verse helps overcome stagnation and pursue the objective God has for us. Stagnation in our work or careers might manifest as a feeling that there are no opportunities for advancement or growth after years in the same role. We may feel that our efforts are insignificant or undervalued. However, we can still recall Joseph’s story in these instances.

Joseph’s life appeared to be trapped after his brothers sold him into slavery, and he was wrongfully imprisoned. But God continued to operate in the background. Joseph eventually rose to a position of considerable authority in Egypt (Genesis 41:41–44). His narrative serves as a reminder that God may propel us ahead in unexpected ways even when we feel stuck.
